Genesis 1:6
And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of
the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.
A
canopy of water vapor acted as a shield, protecting the Genesis patriots
from the intense life shortening radiation of the cosmos.

... for the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth ...
Genesis 1:7
And God made the firmament, and divided the waters
which were under the firmament from the waters
which were above the firmament: and it was so.
Before the Flood of Noah the patriarchs mentioned in Genesis lived over 9 centuries. The Waters above the Firmament acted as a shield protecting the patriarchs from the life shortening cosmic radiation.

The Waters above the Firmament were beginning to collapse. The massive rains began to fall upon the Earth.
| Genesis 7:11 In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened. |
With the Water Vapor Canopy nearly gone, the Heavens filled with stars became visible to the Genesis patriarchs.
| Genesis 7:19 And the waters prevailed exceedingly upon the earth; and all the high hills, that were under the whole heaven, were covered. |
For the very first time, the Waters which were above the Firmament were no longer in place. Without its shield, the human longevity was shortened by the Lord God.

Genesis 6:3 And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years. |

It was at this point, that the WATERS above the firmament were no longer in place. One notes herewith the scientific consistency of the Holy Bible. The stars and the moon were not mentioned at all in the Book of Genesis until at a much later time. The mentioning of the stars and the moon for the first time did not occur until Genesis 15:5. Knowledge of the clear Heavens can be assumed to have been known only by the Post-Flood patriarchs. The clear views towards the Heavens were established only then and the Heavens were wide open for the intense levels of life-shortening solar and cosmic radiation to rain down upon the Earth. |
The stars of the heaven were in sharp, clear view to the patriarchs
only at a much later time in the Book of Genesis.

Modern scientific evidence from Astrophysics strongly supports a thicker atmosphere of an early Earth. Recently discovered extra-solar planets are found to maintained thick atmospheres in their earlier development. An atmosphere of an early Earth containing both air and water vapor, as described in the book of Genesis, has tremendous support of recent findings in Astrophysics. The waters which were above the firmament would have shielded the entire surface of the earth and the its life supporting atmosphere from the intense levels of cosmic radiation responsible for the production of life-shortening radio carbons. How long did the Genesis patriarchs actually live? Genesis 5:27 And all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred sixty and nine years: and he died. Genesis 6:3 And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.
Genesis 9:29 And all the days of Noah were nine hundred and fifty years: and he died.
Immediately after the life of Noah, the longevity of humans was shortened, drastically shortened by the Lord God. Recall that only Noah and his family got to witness a life on both the Pre-Flood and the Post-Flood Earth. Noah and his family saw for the very first time a clear sky, the fullness of the Heavens, the abundance of the stars, a bright sun and moon.
